There are times in the career path where a person moves into a true leadership position for the first time and leaves the ranks of self management or group supervision. To be effective in leadership role there is an enhanced level of self awareness and self reference that needs to be developed. There are also particular skills like team building, strategic planning, influence vs. power, and environmental assessment (corporate culture). While these learnings are part of any executive coaching, the need to focus on and quickly develop these skills is important for a person seeking to establish themselves in their leadership role from the outset.
Building on the executive coaching process this focuses on individuals who are going through transitions in their careers, be it to a new opportunity in their organization or to new positions in another organization. These transitions often involve a feeling of incompetence as the certainty of the old position is replaced by the uncertainty of the new position. In many cases of promotion, success requires that you must change your perspective and let do of what made you successful in the past and learn new skills required to be successful in the new position. Many times executives in such situations are thrown in the deep end and forced to swim with support. The coaching relationship can provide that support and a safe haven to deal with issues without concern of judgment.
