What is Executive Coaching?

Great athletes have had coaches for a long time to help them set and achievement their goals and develop and refine their abilities and knowledge to enhance their performance and results. Executive coaching takes the same approach in the corporate world to allow people at all levels of leadership in organizations to deal with the changes in their business and personal environments and to develop and refine their personal goals and objectives. Organizations now use the tool to help their staff to achieve all of their potential by focusing on the goals of the person, increasing self awareness and empowerment, enhancing learning and change management skills and the early achievement of the goals established.

Some think of coaching as a tool to address issues of under performance. While it once may have started that way a recent survey by Right Management Consultants indicates that 86% of companies said that they used coaching to” sharpen the skills of individuals who have been identified as future organizational leaders.” One survey respondent indicated that “We see more executives choosing coaching as a proactive component of their professional life.”

Leaders and organizations are recognizing that often people within organizations have no sounding boards and no place to brain storm and think out loud and to get direct and timely feedback. The coach/client relationship is perfectly designed in each case to provide this to the client in a safe and non-judgmental environment created solely for the betterment of the individual and the achievement of their goals. Additionally, organizations are also seeing the value in the fact that unlike other developmental tools that coaching develops the individual in the context of their current position without removing them from their day-to day responsibilities. By doing so the impacts of the changes are felt immediately in the results and performance of the client and can be amplified by the ripple effect within teams and departments.

danger for most
of us is not that
our aim is too
high and we miss
it, but that it is
too low and we
reach it"
